The Purpose of Life is to be Happy

To quote the Dalai Lama, “The purpose of life is to be happy.”

The Dalai Lama

Whatever walk of life you are in, whatever religion you belong to, whatever country you are from…there is something to those words and something to be learned from them.

Whether or not the purpose of life is actually “to be happy” is, of course, up for debate. Some may say that God is their purpose in life. Others may say that their families or their legacy is the purpose of life. Others may simply agree with the Dalai Lama’s words and say, yes, the purpose of life is to be happy.

Regardless of what your purpose in life is, you should strive to live a life that makes you happy. That may mean something different to different people, and that’s ok.

What this does mean is to make sure to take time in your life to spend on the things that are most important to you. Life can get hectic at times and we can all get wrapped up in routines and work and deadlines. People who have children often report that they get wrapped up in just getting their kid dressed, to school, and fed all the time. Life can easily become a sort of drudgery. I’ve often found myself getting caught up in the routine of going to work, doing chores, relaxing on the couch, and spending weekends catching up on laundry and grocery shopping.

Happiness is a pursuit that we all must take the time and make the effort to pursue, but it is worthwhile.

Just remember: chores can always wait. Go outside and watch that sunset, meet that friend for dinner, and spend time playing at the park with your kids. Carve out some time to spend on the activities and hobbies that matter to you the most. Do something just for the pure fun and joy of it all. Be financially responsible, but set aside some money to spend on things that are important to you. For me, that is to travel. For you, it might be to pursue a hobby or to take a fun class.

Whatever it is that you want in life, whatever it is that makes you happy, you need to pursue it. Chase your dreams. Follow your passions.Remember, when you’re old and you look back on your life, it is the times you lived life to the fullest that you will remember fondly. Now get out there and make some memories.
