Los Angeles to Moapa Valley: An Art Packed Road Trip

I’m excited to announce a contribution from freelance writer and mother of two, Jenny Holt. She loves nothing more than getting away from it and taking her pet Labrador Bruce for long walks, something she can do a lot more now she’s left the corporate world behind. She has written a post for us today about a great California-Nevada road trip that’s perfect for art lovers. I hope you enjoy her article!

On Appreciating San Diego

I’m going to toot my own horn for a moment…

I live in an awesome city.
Sometimes I don’t really appreciate it as much as I should, because I get caught up in work and traffic and bills and cleaning the apartment and making sure I’ve bought enough eggs to last through the week, but when I do stop and take the time to look around me, I have to say, San Diego is pretty amazing.

I haven’t always lived in San Diego. I’m an L.A. transplant who, like so many before and after me, gave up the glitz and glamour urban sprawl and crush of humanity for a mellower, more pleasant, more quintessentially “California” experience.

Life in California: Perceptions vs. Reality

I get a lot of different reactions from people when I tell them I’m from California. It’s interesting, because no matter where you go in the world, people seem to have an opinion about what California and Californians are like. Some people assume I’m rubbing elbows with movie stars and living the glamorous, “Hollywood” lifestyle. Others assume I must be some kind of a surf bum who smokes weed all the time and talks like a valley girl. Yet others still assume I must be snobby, or rich, or even a crunchy granola hippie. I’ve heard it all.

Check out L.A.’s Laid Back South Bay!

I might live in San Diego, but I grew up an L.A. kid. Once an Angelino, always an Angelino. I love L.A. like only a local can. That big amazing city is full of anything and everything you could possibly want in life, and plenty of things you don’t want. It’s a city of extremes. It’s big. It’s loud. It’s both beautiful and ugly at the same time. It’s full of traffic, but it’s also full of delights.

Places to get your zen on in L.A.

If you’re visiting Los Angeles, you’re going to have so many things to see and do that your time in town will easily be filled with fun, exciting activities and you’ll never be bored. That being said, this is one hectic city and you might end up needing to take a breather somewhere. You can always head to the beach, where the ocean waves gently lapping on the shore (or crashing and roaring, depending on the tide) will put you in a calm state of mind.

That being said, the beach isn’t the only place to find a little peace and serenity in the City of Angels. I highly suggest you check out some of my favorite places to find a little zen in L.A.
